In a statement by Works Minister Edward Katumba Wamala, Karuma Bridge will be fully closed to all traffic from September 23 for a period of three months to facilitate essential repair work. The decision comes after a structural crack was discovered on the bridge earlier this year, in April. Initially, heavy vehicles were restricted from using the bridge following an assessment that revealed the extent of the damage.

The repair project has been contracted to the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) in partnership with China Seventh Railway Group, who have been tasked with addressing the structural defects. The closure is aimed at ensuring the safety and longevity of the bridge, which has remained a crucial link for transportation.
